Screening Mammograms

If you have a symptom or concern

If you have a lump or other breast symptoms that you are concerned about, please contact us or your primary care provider for a clinical exam and follow-up diagnostic tests.

Schedule a screening mammogram

We offer two different types of mammograms depending on your needs and diagnosis:

Diagnostic mammogram

A diagnostic mammogram focuses on a symptom or imaging abnormality. Your insurance company may require a co-pay.

Screening mammogram

A screening mammogram uses low-dose X-ray to reveal cancer in breast tissue before you or your healthcare provider can detect symptoms like abnormal discharge or lumps. Research has shown that early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer improves outcomes and increases survival. Most screening mammograms are covered in full by most health insurance plans.

Our radiology experts in breast cancer recommend regular screening mammograms starting between ages 40 and 50. Discuss your personal and family history with your health care provider to determine:

  • How often you should be screened
  • When you should begin screening
  • Whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast is appropriate in your case.

Screening should continue as long as you are in good health and expected to live at least 10 years or longer from the date of screening.

You can schedule a screening mammogram near you with the Breast Health and Imaging department.

For normal screening mammogram results, you will receive a letter saying so within two weeks. If you have access to the myDH portal, you will receive your results at the same time as your doctor.

If the radiologist recommends further evaluation, a mammography scheduler will call you to set up an appointment for additional imaging.

If breast cancer is detected, you will be referred to us for further evaluation and treatment.
